How to care for vintage leather furniture

Good leather improves with age. A few simple habits keep an armchair or sofa soft, supple and handsome for decades, and help you tell honest patina from damage that needs a restorer.

Patina is not damage

Vintage leather develops patina: soft creases where you sit, a deeper colour at the armrests, a gentle sheen where hands rest. This is the history of the piece and most owners love it.

Damage looks different. Dry cracks that open when you flex the leather, a surface that flakes or peels, split seams and stiff areas that never relax are signs the leather has lost its moisture or its finish.

Everyday care

Dust the surface with a soft dry cloth or a vacuum with a soft brush. Dust works into creases and slowly acts like sandpaper.

Blot spills at once with an absorbent cloth. Press, do not rub. Keep leather out of direct sunlight and away from radiators, stoves and fireplaces: heat and UV light dry it out faster than anything else.

Cleaning

For regular cleaning use a soft cloth that is only slightly damp with lukewarm water, then dry the surface. For stubborn marks choose a pH-balanced cleaner made for leather.

Avoid household sprays, alcohol, bleach, vinegar and baby wipes. They strip the finish. Always test any product on a hidden area first, for example the back or the underside.

Conditioning

Once or twice a year apply a thin layer of leather conditioner with a soft cloth, let it absorb and buff off the excess. More is not better: too much product leaves leather sticky and can darken it.

Natural aniline leather absorbs quickly and may change tone slightly, so test first. If you are unsure which type of leather you have, ask the seller or a restorer.

When to call a restorer

Deep dry cracks, peeling, worn-through colour, sagging seats where the filling has flattened, loose frames and persistent odours are jobs for a workshop. Done in time, restoration is gentler and cheaper than waiting.

In our Kyiv workshop we clean, repair, recolour or re-cover leather furniture by hand. We do not promise to make a piece look new: we restore it so that it keeps its history.
